What is Osteopathy and why I choose it as a profession

June 1, 2016

Osteopathy is an approach to maintaining health that is based on a simple concept: the body has the innate ability to heal itself.

Osteopathy is based on four tenets, these include:

1.     The body is a unit; the person is a unity of body, mind and spirit.
2.     The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.
3.     Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.
4.     Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity,
self-regulating, and interrelationship of structure and function.

These tenets help guide Osteopaths and reminds the public that the body has countless systems to promote change.  An Osteopath uses hands-on techniques to facilitates these changes, but ultimately, the changes are a product of the patient's body, mind and spirit.

I choose this profession the moment I experienced Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine for the first time--on a lab table during the first week of medical school.  My lab partner was practicing the first technique we were taught and I recall thinking, "I could do this the rest of my life."  And that thought has since grown into a passion.  What started off as a consideration has developed into a career that has lead me down a path I am so grateful to be traveling.

Osteopathic Medicine is a humbling field where the practitioner must constantly ask questions about what they are perceiving and how he/she can help facilitate healing.

I am utterly passionate about this profession and will happily answer questions you may have.

Thank you,
